The doubly curved facetted glass shell is an artwork that is commissioned for the Bank of America Corporate Center in Charlotte, NC. The sculpture is located on the 60th floor of the 870’ tower. The form was constructed as a scale-trans-surface, where a s-shaped curve in the y-z-plane (side elevation) is translated along another s-shaped curved in the x-y-plane (plan). Additional to the translation, the first curve is linearly scaled, giving the sculpture a trapezoidal front elevation. It consists of 9 rows and 9 columns of individual glass panes laminated of ½" fully tempered acid etched glass and ¼" annealed dichroic glass. Aluminum corner clips glued to the four corners connect the panes. High strength stainless steel rods in the joints between two glass panes transfer the tensile forces in the shell.
