The formerly outdoor pool of the Roman hot springs in Baden near Vienna was covered with a glass roof thus creating a spacious transparent indoor swimming hall as the central element of a modern spa.
Simple steel ribbons span across almost 30 m in 1.50 m intervals and create the minimized and filigree structure for the roof. Inclined Y-supports deviate the tensioned stress-ribbons towards the facade thus creating the facade profiles anchored by tensioning anchors in the solid basement. This resulted in a highly transparent structure with the clearly visible flow of forces.
Length: 74.5 m
Span: 27.8 m
Height: 10.5 m
Plan dimension: 75 m x 28 m
Plan area: 2,071 m²
Roof area: 2,936 m² (incl. facades)
Material: insulation glass ESG 12 mm und VSG 2 × 8 mm, steel S355, open coil cables Ø 10 mm galfan-coated
Award: Preis Attestato Acai 2001
