Last Friday, the new roof of the traditional natural ice arena was formally opened in Schierke, a district of Wernigerode in the Harz Mountains. Together with GRAFT and WES LandschaftsArchitektur, schlaich bergermann partner has developed an dynamically curved roof shape, which covers the ice rink as a weather protection.
Construction work was just completed Friday morning, just in time for the opening festivities, including an impressive light show and various shows on the ice. Despite the heavy snowfall many curious citizens came to the opening to enjoy skating on the ice rink.
In his inauguration speech the mayor praised the striking design and impressive size of the new building as an important symbol for the development of the region as tourist attraction. The historic hall was originally built in 1910 and in 1950 the first winter sports championships of the GDR took place at the arena.
Now it is being revived with the curved, net-supported membrane roof and is transformed to a multi-functional venue that can be used all year round. The approximately 2,700 square meter membrane roof with the shape of a “Pringle”, opens its sides and hereby offers an unobstructed view of the spectacular surroundings. An edge support encloses the radiant white membrane surface like a ring and is supported at the two lowest points. The impressive size is particularly evident at nightfall, when the roof is illuminated in different colors. For more background information please see our project presentation here.
We congratulate all involved for the successful completion of the project.
