Right on time for the beginning of the 2011/2012 Bundesliga season, Stuttgart´s Mercedes-Benz-Arena has been reopened. After numerous renovations over the past two years the stadium has now become a pure football arena with room for more than 60,000 fans. Our office has been responsible for all of the duties pertaining to the structural design. It was for the track and field world championship in 1992 that we developed the then largest membrane roof in Europe for this stadium. With the completed modernization, we have successfully demonstrated for the first time that spoked wheel roofs are expandable. Enlarged by 3,500m² the roof now protects the new seats, which are located closer to the playing field. We are very pleased with the successful renovation and are looking forward to an exciting football season.
