The architects Gruber+Popp, Berlin designed together with schlaich bergermann and partner two elegant concrete shells that will cover the new train station in front of the Berlin main station (Hauptbahnhof). This design convinced the city of Berlin and the local transport agency (BVG), who anticipates opening the new tram section including the new tram station with its roof by 2014. The jury emphasized that the homogeneous design is humble despite the dynamic shape of the roof. With its unique design the roof does not stand in competition with adjacent buildings. The filigree gesture represents the dynamic of riding a tram (arrive – stop – leave) and connects the adjacent squares.
