Topping-out ceremony experimenta Heilbronn
sbp 21.07.2017

The topping-out ceremony of the experimenta in Heilbronn was celebrated on 13th July. In front of many guests from business and politics it was emphasized that from 2019 on Heilbronn and its new "Cathedrale of knowledge" will feature in the "Champions League of science centers". Already in its construction phase, everyone considers the impressive architectural construction of Sauerbruch Hutton the future landmark of Heilbronn.

As a result of the new spectacular architecture, the innovative message of the experimenta is now also visible: Together with Sauerbruch Hutton, schlaich bergermann partner developed a striking solitaire in direct proximity to the old buildings. Currently the 7,500 square meters exhibition space is located in a historical warehouse and an additional building next to it. A typical red brick façade characterizes both buildings. The new prominent steel-glass construction will host additional 13,500 square meters of the “world of learning and experience”. The pentagon shaped floors situated around a solid core, are shifted offset to each other. The museum will also offer rooms for experiments, a rooftop observatory and a 360-degree dome cinema at the basement.

The building is structured by lattice girders which are connected to a reinforced concrete construction on each floor. Therefore, the construction allows exhibition rooms without any columns. The girders remain visible in the façade by triangular elements, allowing natural light to enter through large glass surfaces. Another important aspect for the design process was to consider flood protection as the building will be located on a small island.

In 2019, right at the beginning of the Federal Garden Show the building will be completed.
