Avicii Arena wins the 2025 Swedish Steel Construction Award

We are delighted that the modernisation of the Avicii Arena has been awarded the Swedish Steel Construction Award by the Swedish Institute of Steel Construction.

Together with HOK and C.F. Møller Architects, schlaich bergermann partner contributed to the precise and technically sophisticated transformation of this iconic spherical arena.

schlaich bergermann partner was responsible for modernising the original supporting structure, integrating a new supporting structure consisting of a compression ring and a pringle shaped cable-net structure hosting the new retractable acoustic system and fully accessible rigging grid. The highly efficient cable-net structure now carries all movable panels and rigging elements – while its walkable surface creates a safe and sustainable platform for future event technology.

35 years after ist inauguration the upgraded arena shines within the skyline of Stockholm as the largest sphere on earth and a state oft he art modern multipurpose arena.

The jury praised the project for its outstanding execution and collaboration:
“The project has been carried out with a very high precision, and in a close and fruitful cooperation between designer, architect, and contractor. This is not least visible in the material efficient cable-net structure and the complex detail work, where extremely large forces are to be transferred between different structural elements. It is a world-class steel structure and a worthy winner of this year’s Steel Construction Award.”

We are proud to have contributed to this challenging steel structure and congratulate the entire project team on their well-deserved recognition.
