Last weekend, the current status of the construction site of the look-out tower at nature park Schönbuch could be viewed in perfect weather. Construction at the so called Stellberg has started a few months ago in order to inaugurate the tower this summer. schlaich bergermann partner was responsible for the entire planning of the project from conceptual design to technical spots check.
After excavation of the pit, the foundation ring was casted despite wintry weather conditions. Since the Stellberg is a former pile of rubbish, care had to be taken to ensure that the underground could not be lowered later due to additional weight. Therefore, the intermediate areas of the foundation were filled with foam glass granulate, which has a significantly lower weight than the excavated material and hereby compensates additional loads of the tower.
Parallel to the work on site, production of staircase segments and steel platforms took place. Additionally, the local larch wood for the masts was processed for assembly. The load bearing structure is assembled in sections. Thereby the single segments together with the platforms are first produced separately and finally stacked on top of each other with a crane. The first step was the installation of the second platform and the subsequent eight wooden masts, as well as the two flights of stairs.
A detailed report is available here.
We are pleased that the construction is progressing rapidly and are looking forward to the next assembly phase.
