June 14 is the big day – the kick-off of the 2024 European Football Championship in Germany! Football fans from around the world are eagerly anticipating this major sporting event, in which five stadiums designed by sbp play a central role.
The venues include the RheinEnergie Stadium in Cologne, Deutsche Bank Park in Frankfurt, Volkspark Stadium in Hamburg, MHP Arena in Stuttgart, and the historic Olympic Stadium in Berlin. Several of these stadiums have been extensively modernized and upgraded in recent months to meet the highest standards of an European tournament.
RheinEnergie Stadium
Completed in 2004, the RheinEnergie Stadium in Cologne replaced the former “Müngersdorfer Stadium” and was built in preparation for the 2006 Football World Cup. The stadium is renowned for its unique pylon structure, that extends above the roof and draws significant attention.
Deutsche Bank Park
This stadium was also renovated for the 2006 Football World Cup and is equipped with a moveable membrane roof. The roof can be opened along the radial cables and is parked centrally over the video cube when retracted. During the European Championship, Germany and Switzerland , among others, will play some of their group matches here.
Volkspark Stadium
Since its modernization in 1998, the Volkspark Stadium features a PVC-coated membrane roof that spans all 55,000 seats. In preparation for the EURO 2024, the nearly 25-year-old roof membrane was replaced. The stadium now shines in new splendor and is ideally equipped to host four group matches and a quarter-final during the tournament.
MHP Arena Stuttgart
The MHP-Arena (formerly known as Mercedes-Benz Arena and Gottlieb-Daimler-Stadium) has undergone several modernizations by sbp. The most recent modernization was carried out for the 2024 European Championships, which involved the renewal of the grandstand, and several extensions works. The renovation work was carried out during the ongoing match season and provided spectacular images.
Olympic Stadium Berlin
With around 76,000 seats, the Olympic Stadium is the largest of the five stadiums. The historic stadium was equipped with a sbp roof structure consisting of 76 identical steel trusses. Particularly noteworthy is the opening on the long side of the stadium, which is caused by the marathon gate and highlights the historical axis.
Football fans can look forward to thrilling matches and an unforgettable atmosphere in these impressive stadiums. We are looking forward to the games and wish the teams from Germany, France and Spain, France great success in the tournament!
