On June 6, 2025, Mike Schlaich, Board Member of schlaich bergermann partner, will give a keynote speech at the FREI OTTO 100 SYMPOSIUM at the Institute for Lightweight Structures and Conceptual Design in Stuttgart. In his lecture, he will highlight the lasting influence of Frei Otto on our office work and lightweight structures in general.
The design of the roof of the Olympic Stadium in Munich in 1972, in which our founders Jörg Schlaich and Rudolf Bergermann were involved, is considered a significant milestone. The cable net structure set new standards in terms of lightness and transparency and fundamentally changed our understanding of structural engineering. Even today, the project has a very special place in the history of schlaich bergermann partner.
Designed by Günther Behnisch, Frei Otto, and Fritz Auer, the project set new standards for lightweight structures. It was one of the first major projects the sbp founders worked on together and remains a turning point in architectural and structural engineering to this day.
The FREI OTTO 100 SYMPOSIUM with the topic “The Spirit of Lightweight Construction” not only offers a historical reflection on Frei Otto’s work, but also serves as a platform for the exchange of experiences between different generations of experts discussing the evolution of the Stuttgarter Schule of lightweight structure.
The symposium is already sold out. However, it is possible to join the waiting list in case additional seats become available.
