We are delighted that the Kunsthalle Mannheim will be officially opened to the public today. Following the relocation of the collection in recent months, the new building will open this evening with a special exhibition by Jeff Wall.
Together with gmp - architects von Gerkan, Marg und Partner we were responsible for the extension as well as for the reconstruction of a connecting wing between old and new buildings.
The design is based on the concept of "a city within a city". Therefore, the new building consists of seven large-format cubes in which the 5,700 square meters of exhibition space are located. The individual cubes are internally connected by stairs and footbridges and are enclosed by a uniform fabric facade on the outside. This creates appealing insights into the collection, especially at dusk.
Admission to the exhibitions is free throughout the weekend.
