New bridge across the Rhine in Cologne

We are pleased to announce a special success today: together with the architects from Cobe and the traffic planners from Viatron AG, sbp was able to convince the jury with its design for a new bridge across the Rhine in Cologne.

With the competition for the two new bridges across the Rhine, the city of Cologne wishes to close the so-called Cologne rings across the Rhine and fortify the city’s ambitions for more sustainable transport.

Our vision for the northern bridge at the Bastei connects the districts and parks on both sides of the Rhine as a green and barrier-free network for pedestrians and cyclists.

The new bridge adds a new typology to the series of striking and distinctive Rhine bridges. As a pure foot and cycle path bridge, the efficient network arch bridges the main span of over 290 m with record-breaking minimal use of materials and arch height. In combination with the shorter secondary span, the shape of the bridge visually picks up on the trajectory of a skipping pebble. The bridge brings the city to life, whether in Theodor-Heuss-Park, over the Rhine or in the Rheinpark. At the same time, the bridge offers places to relax and enjoy striking new views of the old town and the famous Cologne Cathedral.

Many thanks to the entire team and also to the advisory board of the City of Cologne for the constructive dialogue.

We are very proud of the design, which offers a special added value for the citizens of Cologne. The Cologne City Council will discuss the future of the project in April. We hope for a positive decision and look forward to being able to support Cologne on its way to more sustainable mobility!
