New Slow-Traffic System nominated for the Greater Bay Area Urban Design Award 2024

We are delighted to announce that the Dongguan Central Area Elevated Slow-Traffic System project has been nominated for the Greater Bay Area Urban Design Awards 2024 in the “Professional Category (Completed Project – Urban Framework)”!

With Dongguan’s rapid rise as a manufacturing powerhouse, the city is steadily gaining in importance. This requires a comprehensive expansion of the subway and inner-city rail network to meet the increased mobility demands of the population. As part of a regional master plan, the innovative “Slow Traffic System” has been developed in the heart of Dongguan.

The innovative concept of the “Dongguan Central Area Elevated Slow-Traffic System” spans a total length of 3 km, connecting key points such as Central Park and the Civic Center. An additional section is planned to extend the network towards the Xigualing area, also linking major hubs like Huangqi Square and Qifeng Park. The project has been delivered under the leadership of eLandscript Studio, in collaboration with Arup and schlaich bergermann partner.

The project aims to create a safe and fully accessible environment for pedestrians and cyclists. Central elements include the “Social Loop” and the “Green Necklace,” which ensure the harmonious integration of parks, subway entrances, and public spaces. Special emphasis is placed on barrier-free entrances in the Xigualing area to ensure inclusivity for all citizens.

sbp was responsible for structural engineering and consulting for the four bridges (bridges No. 1, No. 2, No. 3A, and No. 4), of which No. 2 and No. 3A have already been successfully built. A highlight of the design is the construction of Social Loop Bridge No. 2, which has a maximum span of 103.5 meters. The structure features a continuous steel girder construction with 10-meter-high arches and 54 cables. The integration of flower boxes and viewing platforms enhances the public space and invites people to linger.

The Dongguan Footpath is designed as a pioneering project for slow traffic that reflects the quality of life of residents. Safe, pleasant footpaths and cycle paths are set to establish new standards for urban infrastructure. The plan aims to seamlessly connect nature and urban life, transforming Dongguan into a sustainable, livable city.

We are excited to see this project come to fruition and the positive changes it will bring to the residents of Dongguan.
