On 16 September 2017 Atlético Madrid celebrated the opening of its new venue, the football arena Wanda Metropolitano, with a home victory. It was originally built in 1994 as an athletic stadium designed by Cruz y Ortiz Arquitectos. Starting 2011, together with schlaich bergermann partner the stadium was converted into a venue exclusively for football, featuring a total of 67,703 seats and covered ranks.
Apart from the completion of the stands, the most striking alteration of the structure is already visible from a distance: the striking canopy, inspired by the spoked wheel principle, is dynamically placed over the ranks and thanks to its cantilevered form offers not only protection of the main stands but also creates a wide overhanging roofing.
The innovative design consists of two compression and two tension rings and a zig-zag shaped membrane, which provides an exciting view for the visitors. The two pressure rings are extended to form a triangular truss, which stretches almost without support over the existing main stands and carries the canopy. The latter is made of radial truss girders with membrane stretched in between. The membrane surface can be lit in color depending on the current situation of the soccer match.
schlaich bergermann partner congratulates Atlético Madrid on its victory and is looking forward to many more exciting highlights in the prestigious stadium.
