At the end of March, after two years of construction, the new highly modern eight-court sports hall was officially opened in Monheim am Rhein. As the largest sports hall in Europe, it is part of a major transformation of Monheim’s school locations.
In line with Monheim’s guiding principle of becoming a “Capital for Children,” the new complex offers enough space for both club sports and physical education classes for several surrounding schools. A total of 4,400 square meters of sports space is now available, which can be used either as two large sports halls—on the ground and upper floors—or as four smaller halls on each level. Additional sports and gymnastics rooms, as well as teaching spaces in an adjacent building, further enhance the facility.
Thanks to the high degree of prefabrication in timber construction, the hall’s roof, façade, and annex building were completed within the short construction timeframe. Precast concrete walls, columns, and prestressed beams significantly accelerated progress in the lower levels and stairwells. To ensure that the building fits visually into its surroundings despite its height, the lower sports hall was set deeper into the ground. The basement was constructed using waterproof concrete and a fresh concrete composite sheeting to withstand potential flooding from the nearby Rhine River.
With the opening of this sports hall complex, a new space for movement and community has been created. The successful realization of the project was made possible through the collaboration of NÜSSLI (general contractor), asp Architekten GmbH (architecture), Herzner und Schröder (building services engineering), and Corall Ingenieure GmbH (fire protection). We are proud to have contributed to this exceptional project!
