Bicycle Highway Bridge in Böblingen Officially Inaugurated

This week, our bicycle highway bridge crossing the busy Panzerstraße in Böblingen was officially opened, drawing significant public interest. The bridge is part of Baden-Württemberg’s first bicycle highway (RS 1), connecting Stuttgart and Böblingen, which has already recorded around 1.5 million bike rides.

The new bridge offers cyclists a safe, uninterrupted crossing over the busy district road 1057, which is used by around 20,000 vehicles each day. By closing this gap, a potential accident hotspot, especially during rush hour, is now eliminated. With its elegant arch design, the bridge guides cyclists smoothly over the road without forcing them to slow down. The chosen route takes advantage of the existing topography to minimize the bridge’s overall length.

Including its access ramps, the bridge is 5 m wide and approximately 200 m long. Given the low ambient lighting in the area, special attention was paid to illumination: a sensor-controlled LED handrail lighting system ensures even visibility and a high level of safety.

The structure consists of a slender steel box girder with cantilevered side consoles supporting the deck slab. Slender steel columns, supported by maintenance-free stainless steel point-tilt bearings, transfer the loads into the ground. The superstructure is monolithically connected to the fixed columns and abutments to minimize maintenance. A striking steel arch spans the main section, both reinforcing the box girder and serving as a key architectural element. The arch and superstructure are linked by rib-like steel plates, creating a sleek and efficient design.

With this new bicycle highway bridge, an important step has been taken to make cycling in the region safer, more comfortable, and more attractive. During the inauguration, Minister of Transport Winfried Hermann, District Administrator Roland Bernhard, and Mayor Dr. Stefan Belz all emphasized the bridge’s significance for developing a modern cycling infrastructure and supporting the shift towards sustainable mobility.

We thank the entire team for their outstanding collaboration!
