A new railroad station complex has been built in Nanchang, a Chinese metropolis with a population of five million.
For this project, sbp collaborated with the architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp), the China Railway Siyuan Survey and Design Group (T4) and the Shanghai United Design Group (UDG).
The East Railway Station covers a total area of around 100,000 m² with 16 tracks on eight platforms. Key design elements are the building’s three-aisled arched structure and the central column-free waiting hall. The roof consists of 14 rows of triple steel arch elements, which were prefabricated on the construction site and then brought into their final position. This approach significantly reduced the construction time.
In addition to the station concourses, cab ranks and subway stations, the new transportation hub in the east of the city also offers space for restaurants and retail stores. It is the centerpiece of a new urban development area that will feature office space for start-up companies, stores, cultural spaces and the creative industries as well as residential apartments. The opening of the station will further open up the high-speed rail network in China and will enable shorter travel times to major cities such as Beijing, Hong Kong, Kunming and Shanghai.
