Albert Einstein Education and Research Center is located next to the Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein in the Morumbi district of São Paulo. In its east wing, the building is used as a medical education center, while the west wing serves as a research center.
The design highlights a perfect synthesis with the native Brazilian flora planted in the center’s internal and external gardens. It features a large atrium spanned by a skylight that is the longest-spanning glass roof in Brazil at completion. A shading system integrated into the skylight adapts to São Paulo’s volatile climate, creating for people passing through the hall the sensation of walking under a leafy tree. At the same time, the system allows sufficient daylight for the plants inside, while filtering out heat gains and glare.
The roof’s geometry is based on three intersecting spheres, with a steel grid manufactured in prefabricated sections that form regular rectangular spacing for the glass infill. In between the skylight and the roof garden lies a vertical facade. Columns around the perimeter of the facade support the structure of the skylight. sbp served as engineer of record for the project.
