The Backnang city bridge is a pedestrian bridge at Backnang station. The bridge spans five tracks and offers three platform exits as well as access to Maubacher Höhe. The aim was to replace the old and heavily corroded city bridge from 1960 with a new bridge that provides barrier-free access both for the platforms and for crossing the tracks for inner-city pedestrian traffic. The design includes all structures carried out by the city of Backnang, i.e. the bridge with its substructures, four staircase structures, as well as the northern and southern lift towers. The scope of planning also included the demolition of the old city bridge. Due to the heavy weight of the individual spans, appropriate lightening measures had to be implemented. The auxiliary structures required for the demolition were erected during ongoing rail operations so that the old city bridge could be completely demolished within the approved closure period of one weekend.
The bridge is an integral steel bridge with a superstructure in the form of a multi-cell box girder. The span lengths are reduced by Y-supports. On the south side of the bridge, the bridge is firmly clamped into the abutment. The southern abutment is located on a slope. The bridge should appear as restrained as possible, with straight edges and the highest possible transparency of the railing.
The superstructure and stairs are illuminated using LED handrail lighting. As the bridge is located directly above a 5-track electrified DB line, not only the corresponding health and safety measures have to be complied with here, but work also has to be carried out during the notified and approved track possessions.
