The international cultural center is located in the halls of a former harbor crane factory in Hamburg-Winterhude. Kampnagel was the name of the company that operated on the Osterbek Canal from 1875. Most of the factory is a listed building. The first parts of the halls date from the 19th century and were gradually added to. Parts of it were destroyed during World War II and later rebuilt. The complex also includes an administrative building from the 20th century.
The project essentially involves the renovation of the existing halls, some of which are to receive new fixtures and mezzanines, the construction of a new hall (K7) above the existing foyer with rehearsal spaces, a sound studio and storage areas, the renovation of the administrative building and the construction of a new residence building with connecting bridges to the administration.
The project poses particular challenges for the construction process, as the construction project is to take place while cultural activities continue.
In addition to the goal of making the theater future-proof for its program and users, the project meets the highest standards and requirements for sustainability, environment and energy efficiency, as well as for the protection of historical monuments and accessibility.
