Eight-segment gymnasium Monheim

©

As part of a comprehensive plan of measures for the reorganization of the school campus, the city of Monheim decided to build an ultra-modern eight-court sports hall on the Berliner Ring. The sports hall is to be used by the two neighboring schools as well as by Monheim’s sports clubs.
In cooperation with NÜSSLI (general contractor), asp Architekten GmbH (architecture), engineering firm Herzner und Schröder (technical building equipment) and Corall Ingenieure GmbH (fire protection), a modern and sustainable building was created. Four hall units are accommodated on each of two floors, which can be interconnected as required. The supporting structure in the basement floors, the sports hall ceiling and the bracing cores is made of concrete. The first level is set a little lower into the ground to visually reduce the height of the building and ultimately to better integrate it into the cityscape.
Due to the possibility of the Rhine flooding, the basement was constructed using a waterproof concrete composite membrane. To prevent uplift in the area of the sports hall, micropiles were installed in the load-bearing subsoil.
The facade, the hall roof and the four-storey annexe building with technical, sanitary, social and gymnastics areas were realized as a wooden structure.
Thanks to the hybrid construction method with prefabricated reinforced concrete and wooden elements, Europe’s first eight-fold gymnasium was built in the shortest possible time.
