The former Maria-Hilf Bridge, located close to the Maria Hilf Clinic in the center of Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler, was completely destroyed by the flood in July 2021. As part of this project, the important connection between Hemmesserstraße and Oberstraße will be restored.
The objective of the replacement structure at the original bridge location is to provide a bridge that does not adversely affect floodwater flow or water levels, while offering a high degree of flood resilience.
The new Maria-Hilf Bridge is planned as a shared route for pedestrians and cyclists with two-way traffic. Occasional use by service vehicles is also envisaged.
A hydraulic lifting system ensures that the specified minimum freeboard is maintained during the design flood event HQ100 (100-year flood). Potential impacts from floating debris, blockages, or water pressure due to flow against or over the bridge deck do not need to be considered, as even during HQExt events (extreme flood with low probability of occurrence) the bridge, in its raised position, will not be exposed to direct flow and sufficient freeboard will be available.
