Footbridge ‘Promenadendeck’ Erfurt

© Michael Moser

In the Thuringian state capital Erfurt, the Promenadendeck pedestrian and cyclist bridge was constructed over the Gera flood channel and Stauffenbergallee. It was designed as the starting point and an important component of the city center expansion in connection with the “ICE-City” project, replacing a prestressed concrete structure from the GDR era. The design, developed in collaboration with DKFS Architects, won a competition in 2017.
Structurally, the bridge is a sophisticated hollow box girder that responds to structural and load-bearing requirements, traffic flow needs, accessibility, and architectural objectives. Above the road, the deck forms a minimal box with an elegant camber. The bridge then crosses the city tram line with an efficient cross-section, maintaining the required clearance with a significantly reduced profile. From there, the hollow box expands into trough-shaped cross-sections over the flood channel. Wide seating steps with views of the green space complement the public area here.
The branching steel structure features a short and a long side, allowing pedestrians and cyclists to cross either just the flood channel or both the heavily trafficked Stauffenbergallee with the planned tram line barrier-free.
