The Gabriel Montpied Stadium, built in 1995 by architect Jacques Kalisz, consists of a main stand – the Gergovie stand – and several modular stands. The football stadium, which currently has a capacity of 7,000 seats, is to be expanded in several stages to a total capacity of 30,000 seats.
Inspired by the volcanic landscape of the nearby Chaîne des Puys, the stadium design is conceived as an elegant structure that surrounds the existing grandstand, creating a unified appearance that the stadium lacks today.
The currently existing grandstand will be integrated into the new design, and it will be complemented by three further stands on the other sides of the pitch. In this project, schlaich bergermann partner is responsible for the planning of both the roof and the facades. The new stands will have a continuous roof, consisting of a 45 m long steel cantilever structure and a roofing made of a glass fibre membrane. The facade will consist of a single-layer ETFE foil.
