Gasteig HP8 Isarphilharmonie

Munich, Germany, 2021

As the largest cultural center in Europe, the Gasteig in Munich unites important cultural and educational institutions under one roof. Since its opening in 1985, the renowned venue featuring its own concert hall has also been home to the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra. After 30 years of intensive use, the complex is undergoing general renovation for a period of about 5 years starting at the end of 2020. For this period, a feasibility study was carried out resulting in an area belonging to the Munich City Utilities in the neighborhood of Sendling as an interim quarter, and investigating and evaluating various usage scenarios for the area. The main objective was to maintain the brand "Gasteig" at the interim site. This requires above all, the accommodation of as many uses as possible in the same location. To accommodate the Philharmonic Orchestra, a new venue is being erected south of the existing building, the so-called "Hall E". The former transformer hall will be converted and used as a foyer for the Philharmonic Orchestra as well as for several different shared purposes. The new building is designed as an effective modular construction. A steel supporting structure with lattice trusses forms the outer part. Together with a glass facade and the roofing, this creates the exterior building shell. On the inside, the concert hall’s supporting structure is made of a laminated timber construction.
