The Hong Kong Jockey Club Conghua Racecourse is located next to Songyuan, which is approx. 180 km from Hongkong and 60 km to Guangzhou city center.
The roof is the key element of the project. The large, suspended cable structure, which covers the parade ring and the main grandstand with its balconies, is intended to tie in with the traditional architecture and contribute to an efficient construction and a uniform overall appearance of the building by using the latest design techniques.
The structural system of the north roof over the parade ring is a suspended roof system supported by a cantilevered truss at the top and A-frames at the bottom. The main suspended elements are the ribbons. Additional props at the top and bottom increase the bending stiffness of the ribbons.
The structural system of the south roof is a truss system supported by pendulum columns from the top of the stand, with a large cantilevered truss at the southern tip.
The north and south roofs are connected at a joint line where axial forces and moments are released to avoid interaction between the two different structural principles, suspended roof and trussed roof.
PV cells integrated into the coloured roof cladding provide power for the building.
The new grandstand will offer a high-quality visitor experience providing a forward-thinking and long-term sustainable development.
