Kai Tak Sports Park is located on the former site of Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport and, covering approximately 28 hectares, will be the largest sports and leisure facility in the city.
At the heart of the development is the main stadium, featuring one of the largest retractable roofs of its kind worldwide. The innovative roof system enables the stadium to host a wide range of sports and entertainment events in all weather conditions.
The fixed roof above the spectator stands is supported by four massive steel trusses spanning the field in an east-west direction. The retractable roof panels move along these trusses via a winch system fully integrated into the stadium bowl. The cables run along the stadium’s central axis and are redirected via large pulleys to the front edge of the moving roof segments. The system allows the roof to fully open or close within just 30 minutes, transforming the stadium atmosphere and functionality in a short time. In case of a typhoon warning, the roof automatically closes and is mechanically locked into position.
Due to its proximity to residential areas, the stadium places strong emphasis on acoustic performance. When closed, the roof provides high sound insulation. A multi-layer roof structure, combined with retractable acoustic baffles along the inner roof edge, effectively dampens low-frequency noise—making the stadium a perfectly soundproofed event arena.
