In Longgang, a city south of Wenzhou in Zhejiang Province, a multifunctional center is being constructed for a newly developing district. The complex includes a stadium, a swimming pool, halls for various ball sports, a fitness center, and several commercial spaces.
The stadium’s distinctive feature is its striking crescent-shaped roof, which appears to float above the west stand. The supporting structure mainly consists of a sickle-shaped, exposed steel beam and a PTFE membrane connected over the ring beam and cantilever beams. To give the stadium an open and transparent appearance, the roof is supported by 16 very slender columns and only two robust columns at the ends. The seating arrangement is designed to open the view southeastward toward the sea.
Since Longgang is located in a typhoon-prone area, the open design and roof inclination help to minimize wind loads effectively.
Thanks to optimized architectural and structural planning, the building stands out not only for its cost efficiency and sustainability but also for the perfect harmony of function and aesthetics.
