The Montréal Olympic Stadium, an iconic landmark since its opening in 1976, is receiving a new, modern roof. In 2018, sbp, together with gmp and WSP, was commissioned by the Société du Parc Olympique to replace the existing membrane roof with an innovative structure.
Designed by architect Roger Taillibert, the stadium is distinguished by its striking concrete observation tower, from which the original roof was suspended by cables. As the lightweight roof has reached the end of its service life, a new roof is being constructed to withstand Montréal’s harsh climate year-round while seamlessly integrating into the unique architecture.
The new interior roof will be a suspended steel truss structure, partially hung from the tower and partially supported by the stadium’s cantilever beams, creating the effect of elegantly “floating” above the existing building. The roof deck is sealed with a white PVC membrane to maintain a connection to the original roof. Inside, a glass/PTFE lining with indirect lighting provides a modern and sophisticated atmosphere.
sbp acts as the client representative and lead consultant throughout the design development phase. The scope includes all architectural, technical, and event-related equipment necessary for arena operations. Additionally, sbp supports the client with sustainable demolition strategies and evaluates the reuse and enhancement of existing materials.
