Panorama Constance

At the entrance to the city of Konstanz, a new exhibition building is being developed by Panorama Konstanz GmbH & Co. KG to house a monumental 360° panorama by artist Yadegar Asisi. The cylindrical structure will offer an impressive, immersive depiction of the historic Council of Constance, serving both as a spatial experience and an architectural landmark.
The building is defined by its central panorama hall – a large-volume, nearly column-free interior space, interrupted only by a central staircase tower approximately 15 meters in height. The overall spatial program is complemented by an exhibition area, a multifunctional space, and a restaurant with a wraparound terrace offering panoramic views over Konstanz and Lake Constance.
The structure is designed as a hybrid construction: a solid reinforced concrete base supports the upper structure, which consists of a prefabricated timber framework. The façade, composed of colored expanded metal panels, gives the 50-meter-high cylinder a striking and dynamic appearance.
Due to challenging subsoil conditions, the foundation is executed using bored piles. Additional design challenges stem from the building’s height, requiring careful consideration of fire safety, wind loads, and seismic activity, as the site is located in an earthquake-prone region.
