Reichenbach sports hall and canteen

© Oliver Rieger

In Reichenbach an der Fils, a modern, divisible sports hall has been constructed to replace the former school gymnasium. The cafeteria, originally planned as a separate building, was integrated into the new structure, bringing the sports hall, cafeteria, and gymnastics room together under one roof.
The load-bearing structure combines reinforced concrete and timber construction. In the cafeteria, gymnastics room, and changing areas, reinforced concrete slabs are used. Wherever feasible from a structural and exposure-class perspective, recycled-concrete mixes with recycled aggregates were employed—contributing to sustainable construction.
The large-span roof areas above the sports hall and the gymnastics room consist of prefabricated timber rib panels. Each rib element is composed of two glued-laminated timber ribs and a cross-laminated timber panel bonded to the ribs. The roof elements bear on a reinforced concrete slab on one side and on a reinforced concrete wall on the opposite side. Together with the two gable walls, the concrete slab provides bracing for the roof structure.
The remaining roof areas of the sports hall are designed as flat slabs supported by edge beams, reinforced concrete columns, and walls. To create generous spaces on the ground floor, the upper-floor walls act as deep beams. A small grandstand made of precast concrete elements runs the entire length of the hall. The building is founded on circular concrete piles.
