Renovation of the suspended ceiling of the Oympic Swimming Pool

© schlaich bergermann partner / Michael Zimmermann

The impact of the new suspended ceiling was based on the existing structure, in order to not distort the original architectural design. The number of construction-physics critical suspensions was reduced by 2/3 through the application of up-to-date materials and calculation methods. Furthermore it was possible to reconstitute the originally intended transparency of the roof system – consisting of load-bearing membrane, insulation and protective sheeting. The flexible façade connection as well as the steel structure of the lighting catwalks (suspended from the cable net roof) were reconditioned and adapted to suit current standards. The flexible façade connection consisting of a pneumatic tube made of ETFE-foil as well as the reduced lighting catwalk designed as a suspended, filigree simple beam string contribute to the light-flooded appearance of the swimming pool.
