Since its construction, the Estadio Monumental has been continuously renovated and expanded. After the most recent expansion to around 85,000 spectators, it is regarded as the largest football stadium in South America.
As part of the current project, an innovative, free‑standing 360° upper tier with around 16,000 additional seats is being built around the existing stadium. On top of this new tier, a hybrid ring‑cable roof structure will be added to provide full coverage. This will increase the total capacity to about 101,000 spectators, making the stadium the second-largest club football stadium in the world.
A special highlight is the skywalk, which allows visitors to take a secure walk high above the stadium roof. In addition, two VIP gondolas are being integrated into the roof structure. Suspended within the roof space, they will each offer an exclusive stadium experience for around 40 guests.
The planning process presents particular challenges due to the dense urban setting and the existing structure beneath the new works. The geometry of the new structure and the positioning of the new supports must be carefully adapted to the local conditions. Moreover, all conversion and construction measures are to be carried out without interrupting ongoing stadium operations.
