The new “Water Worlds” themed landscape is part of the comprehensive redesign of the north-western area of Osnabrück Zoo and is dedicated to the habitat and theme of the North Sea. In addition to the redesign of the seal and sea lion enclosures, the penguin and pelican enclosures, the adjacent visitor path, planting areas and a new play area were also planned.
The scope of sbp’s services included the planning of the water basins, the buildings for the sea lion enclosure, the penguin enclosure, the pelican aviary and the excavations required for the construction of the water basins.
The water basins for the sea lions are planned as water-impermeable concrete tubs, which were made of reinforced concrete on site. The underwater viewing area is a special visitor experience. It consists of a reinforced concrete construction that is surrounded by a 1.75 m high water level. The glazed areas are made of partially toughened laminated safety glass. The roof ceiling above the visitor area with a span of approx. 8 m is designed as a reinforced concrete slab.
The outside area of the pelican enclosure is spanned at a height of approx. 4 m with an open cable net made of nylon cables, which are braced against the masts at the edge of the enclosure. The masts are made of wooden trunks, which are anchored with a support base made of galvanized structural steel in a concrete foundation.
The penguin enclosure consists of a timber structure with a purlin roof and a base plate with an embedded water basin made of waterproof concrete.
