Zoo Osnabrueck – Water Worlds

© Zoo Osnabrück gGmbH

As part of the redesign of the zoo’s northwest area, the “Water Worlds” theme area was created to showcase the North Sea habitat. The project includes the redesign of the seal, sea lion, penguin, and pelican enclosures, as well as visitor paths, planting areas, and a new play zone.
sbp was responsible for planning the watertight reinforced concrete pools, the animal enclosure structures, and the necessary excavation works. The sea lion pools are cast-in-place reinforced concrete basins featuring a continuous underwater viewing area made of partially prestressed laminated safety glass. The visitor area’s roof slab spans approximately 8 meters and is constructed as a reinforced concrete plate.
The pelican enclosure is covered by an open nylon rope net suspended about 4 meters high, tensioned between wooden poles anchored in concrete foundations with galvanized steel supports. The penguin enclosure is a timber-framed structure with a purlin roof and an inset watertight concrete pool (WU concrete).
This project combines technical precision with naturalistic design and modern construction methods.
