Introduction: West Bund Bridges

schlaich bergermann partner design for the new road and light rail bridge was selected amongst 6 entries and will be built in 2017.

 

The development of the new West Bund is one of the major inner city projects in Shanghai to improve quality of life and bring back the public to the Huangpu Riverbanks. Previously, the river banks of the Huangpu River served as industrial areas. Since Shanghai is growing fast, residential and new office buildings are developed along the river, which creates the demand to remove the old industry and transform the banks into river parks and cultural areas for local recreation.

 

Numerous creeks are flowing into the Huangpu River and need to be crossed by pedestrians, individual transport and public transport. In the park areas, West Bund will build nicely designed and pleasing pedestrian bridges. The pedestrian bridge at Zhangjiatang creek is already being executed according to schlaich bergermann partner design.

Zhangjiatang Pedestrian Bridge

This pedestrian bridge is located on the Zhangjiatang River, which is a west tributary of Huangpu River. The client chose the elegant and simple "Finktruss"-option out of three very interesting options, which were proposed. Construction works will begin at the end of 2016.

Dianpu River Bridge

Longteng Avenue, the main traffic artery along the West Bund, consist of 2 x 2 lanes of traffic and light rail tracks among other necessary functions. At Dianpu the bridge has to span across the 75 m wide river and additional lanes at the river banks, which leads to a total bridge length of 140 m. schlaich bergermann partner proposed two different solutions for this site location.

 

An iconic and innovative cable-stayed street- and railroad bridge with an additional pedestrian bridge at the river front resulted in a 2nd prize.

Winning Design

The winning scheme is a three-span beam bridge integrating all pedestrian and traffic functions.

The beam shape follows the bending-moment diagram. The outer walkways are arranged with the swing of the bridge creating a unique crossing experience. A secondary walkway - which is suspended underneath the deck - creates a covered and barrier-free walkway which can be easily accessed by cyclists and people with disabilities.

Construction will be started in May 2017 and be finished by end of 2017.
