马拉卡纳体育场是世界最著名的足球场之一。为了满足2014世界的使用，对现有体育场进行现代化更新改造。由于历史和文化的意义，尊重的对待现有建筑成为本设计最重要的目的。为了尽可能的保持原有建筑的外观，新的屋面应尽可能少的应用在原建筑的内沿和外缘，且悬浮在体育场上空的屋顶应尽可能的保持低平。设计是利用轮辐式的环状结构原理，由一个压力环和三个拉力环构成。新的更大的屋顶将代替原有的悬臂式旧屋顶仍由原有建筑的立柱支撑。整个屋顶覆盖着聚四氟乙烯玻璃纤维膜，并且看台也将被重建。
