First prize in Dortmund bridge design competition
sbp 14.11.2019

schlaich bergermann partner has been announced as one of two winners in the competition for the new Lindemann bridge in Dortmund, Germany. In an anonymous competition, our bridge design was selected from a total of 17 submissions.

The winning bridge design provides an elegant and direct link for pedestrians and cyclists to reach Dortmund’s multi-purpose venues Westfalenhallen, the trade fair, and the football stadium. Crossing a busy, six-lane street, the bridge is fully assessible and ensures free passage for all users via two loop-shaped pathways. Additionally, there are two staircases for pedestrians, integrating smoothly with the overall design of the bridge.

While the existing bridge is a highly frequented and important connection in the city, it is not accessible for wheelchair users and people with mobility problems, and therefore will be replaced.

In the competition for the new bridge, the second winning entry was submitted by Dr. Kreutz+Partner. Following the competition, the next step will be the negotiation with both winners; the plans for the new bridge are to be finalized next year. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2021.
