Shaping Baukultur

Through daily challenges and exciting projects, even experienced professionals find ways to grow professionally at sbp. International projects with a high degree of complexity, design at the cutting edge of technology and the integration of the latest findings from research and development ensure varied work and continuous challenges. New specialists quickly take on responsibility in highly motivated project teams, working on the design of bridges, sports facilities or high-rise and special structures. With our focus on sustainability, they help us make optimal use of all available construction materials and minimize the ecological footprint of our projects.

Career entry

Career entry - a supported start

We offer young employees the opportunity to work as a full member of a project team from day one in order to gain hands-on experience and grow steadily in their tasks. They are supported and accompanied by experienced mentors and our sbp Academy seminars and training sessions, which are especially aimed at young professionals. Regular discussions with project managers and People & Culture employees ensure that young professionals quickly find their way around the company, are integrated both professionally and socially, and can freely develop their potential.

Internship

Learning by Doing

We offer prospective engineers in their advanced semesters of higher education the opportunity to further develop their technical expertise and actively support our project teams as part of a six-month internship.  They are guided by experienced engineers who pass on their knowledge with great commitment. When filling vacant internship positions, we pay particular attention to enthusiasm for challenging structural engineering projects, a high level of dedication and the ability to work in a team.

“The flexible hours and ability to work remotely help me fulfill my corporate responsibilities as a Director at sbp while also being there for my family.”

Jannika Erichsen, Director

We offer flexibility

I started at sbp as a structural engineer in 2015. In the beginning, there was a lot to learn, but a collegial working environment and the mentoring program allowed me to quickly find my feet. Since then, I have gained incredibly varied and intensive experience. Every project brings with it its own individual questions and challenges, from which new ideas and concepts emerge. Through intensive teamwork with my colleagues and project partners, I’ve also developed many friendships along the way.

My highlights of the last few years include trips abroad, such as the inspection of the Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro and the project management for the Sydney Football Stadium during the Australian summer months. Over time, I have become increasingly involved with higher-level issues at sbp. As a director, one of my responsibilities today is sustainability. Driving this aspect forward is close to my heart.

In the meantime, I have a family of my own and it is very important to us at sbp that this is compatible with my professional responsibilities. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t a challenge at times. However, the flexible working hours and the possibility of mobile work help. I think the numerous young mothers and fathers in our company see it similarly. In conjunction with the strong basis of trust, good conditions exist for me to be able to meet my demands in both areas of life.

Demanding variety

I joined the Paris office in 2017 as a senior architect and lead designer and have now worked on more than 25 projects. The opportunity to actively work on a variety of very different, challenging projects is what makes working at sbp so special for me. New challenges await me every day – I never get bored!

My work on the design of the curved glass façade for the Institut Servier in Paris-Saclay remains a special memory for me – the development of the breathable outer skin made of glass required close coordination between all those involved and presented us with new challenges. However, thanks to the cross-team exchange with all sbp locations worldwide, we were able to draw on the experience of another project team and find the best solution for our client!

One of the most important things I appreciate at sbp is the pleasant working atmosphere. I enjoy coming into the office and working here at my desk with a view of the Eiffel Tower – yet I also like to take advantage of the opportunity to work in my home office once a week. For me, a quiet, relaxed working environment has a direct impact on my productivity. At sbp, I find that both in the office and in the home office.

“Working on many different and challenging projects is what working at sbp is all about for me.”

“At sbp, I appreciate the variety and quality of the projects, the friendly interaction, the helpfulness and openness of the experienced colleagues, and the high level of trust placed in each employee.”

Anne Burghartz, Project Manager

Variety and quality of projects

I joined sbp sonne at the beginning of 2017 and was very quickly able to take over project management for a solar project in southern Italy. In the meantime, I work as a civil engineer for the umbrella company sbp at the Berlin office and deal with a wide variety of structures. These include membrane structures, towers, bridges, high-rise buildings or even works of art. What I appreciate about sbp is the variety and quality of the projects, the friendly cooperation and the helpfulness and openness of the experienced colleagues, as well as the high level of trust that is placed in every employee.

The most exciting project for me so far was planning the wrapping of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. As project manager, I had to manage my largest team to date. The contact with the artists, the high artistic as well as static demands on our supporting structure, the cooperation with the preservationists and the great public attention of the project presented me with completely new challenges. The close collaboration with the Christo team on site and the exciting months on the construction site in Paris also made the project very special for me.

Another favorite project I’ve worked on is the Atelier Albert Oehlen. Here, I particularly enjoyed the high level of innovation! We built prototypes of the planned carbon cable net facade, conducted tests in collaboration with various universities, and produced titanium components from the 3D printer.

Exchange and cooperation worldwide

I have been with sbp since 2017 – from the very beginning, international networking has been what makes the day-to-day work interesting for me. And not only because of the many international projects, but also because of the close cooperation and exchange between our office locations worldwide. This has already allowed me to learn and take away so much from many different colleagues.

In my very first month at sbp, for example, I was able to visit the Paris office for a week. The experience I gained during this time is currently helping me to actively support and shape the development of our young office in Madrid. In addition, I was already in our Shanghai office for a month to work on some competitions and supported the team on site. Here I was able to directly experience how much faster project development takes place. In the meantime, I have joined sbp in Madrid, having spent the previous three years at our headquarters in Stuttgart. I also keep in close contact with my colleagues in Sao Paulo, New York and Berlin – as a member of the cross-location BIM team.

What I also find important and good is that the exchange also takes place outside of work. When I joined sbp, I was new to Stuttgart. The many sports groups, privately organized meet-ups and many sbp excursions helped me to quickly make friends. The friendly, collegial interaction among each other – whether engineers, architects, designers, administration or IT – creates a colorfully mixed, multidisciplinary, multicultural group. And I appreciate that very much!

“From the beginning, international networking has been what makes the day-to-day work interesting for me.”
