From idea to location
The founding of our Berlin office 20 years ago was both a logical and forward-looking step for sbp. With Mike Schlaich’s appointment as Professor for Design and Construction in Concrete Structures at the Technical University of Berlin and his recognition as a checking engineer, the Berlin office was established on a foundation of integrated research and practice.
With the new office and team, Mike Schlaich set out to carry forward the traditions and objectives of sbp in new projects and within Berlin’s rapidly evolving architectural and construction disciplines. Early on, the team took responsibility for the design and overall planning of international projects such as the Yamuna Bridge at Wazirabad in New Delhi, a 675-meter-long asymmetrical cable-stayed bridge. At the same time, defining structures were built in Germany, including the Exzenterhaus in Bochum, whose striking form pointed to new directions in high-rise construction. This combination of innovation and built reality made the Berlin office an important driver within sbp from the very beginning.
Innovation from Berlin
The Berlin office soon evolved into a driving force for new materials and construction methods. With the development and application of infra-lightweight concrete, which combines structural capacity and thermal insulation in a single element due to its low density, new avenues in monolithic construction were opened that enhance efficiency, sustainability and architectural quality. In close collaboration with industry partners, the prefabricated slab system concap was created, which brings the traditional jack-arch floor into the present and significantly reduces material use compared to conventional slab systems.
Similarly, Mike Schlaich’s long-standing research on carbon prestressed structures has led to Berlin’s first pedestrian bridge built with this technology. These developments exemplify the ambition to connect technical innovation with building culture to create solutions that respond to the demands of contemporary construction.
At the same time, the office repeatedly sets new highlights, for example through collaboration with the team of Christo and Jeanne-Claude, whose wrapping of the Arc de Triomphe in 2021 is a prime example of how engineering expertise can become visible in an artistic context.
Responsibility and outlook
The Berlin office is shaped by the interaction between Boris Reyher, who has headed the office since 2010 and was appointed Managing Director in 2023, and Mike Schlaich as Board Member. Thomas Schoknecht assumes key responsibilities for sbp prüfingenieure gmbh and, together with Fernando Sima and Moritz Meiselbach, forms the Director Team in Berlin.
Demanding projects in bridge and building design as well as structural review define the office’s profile. Projects such as the Königsstuhl footbridge or assessment work for the Edge East Side Tower in Berlin illustrate the range of tasks and the ongoing development of the office. At the same time, integrating technology and research remains a core element, evident in pioneering projects such as the supermarket on Revaler Straße or the “Betonoase” in Lichtenberg.
