The success of a membrane structure is very much depending on the chosen form and the developed structural details. Similar as for concrete shells, mechanical formulations are given, to be considered for the form finding process. Thus possible geometrical forms need to be double curved and the membrane needs to be prestressed. When designing membrane structures, the flow of forces is one key to be closely followed and the detailing of the deformable structures is the second.
