As designers, we need to find radical solutions to reduce the amount of resources that are used in the built environment. One possible first step towards that goal is to better understand how the projects of Pritzker Prize winner Frei Otto and numerous collaborators achieved elegant, lightweight design solutions that were ahead of their time in terms of innovation, but also sustainability.
This presentation organized by IABSE-USA and held by Michael Stein will expand on the principles of lightweight design, look at historic and modern precedents, discuss materials and technologies, and address how architects and engineers can work together to conserve resources.
