First prize in Hamburg bridge design competition

schlaich bergermann partner together with gmp von Gerkan, Marg and Partners Architects (Hamburg), and engineering office Fritz Spieth Beratende Ingenieure GmbH (Esslingen), have won the design competition for a new bicycle and pedestrian bridge in Hamburg, Germany. The competition jury unanimously selected the winning entry for Hamburg’s Rothenburgsort district.

The 135 m long beam bridge spans over the Oberhafen canal, aligning itself to the course of the path, and providing a smooth and uncomplicated connection, especially for cyclists. Its sophisticated cross-section and clear detailing provide a high recognition value. Furthermore, the plain but nevertheless memorable design of the bridge does not compete with the surrounding structures that shape the cityscape nor the surrounding reedlands. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2022.

For several years, the 95 hectare “Billebogen” area in the central district of Rothenburgsort has been under development in Hamburg. An important goal was the upgrading of open spaces and route connections, such as a by creating a direct link between the HafenCity and the city district. The new bicycle and pedestrian bridge will link the green peninsula of Entenwerder with the Elbbrücken area, connecting also the Elbbrücken metro and local railway stations, engineered by sbp.

schlaich bergermann partner congratulates all those involved and is looking forward to further cooperation on the project.
