Tram Stop at Berlin Main Train Station

On the northern forecourt of Berlin’s main railway station, an important interchange point was built as part of the tram extension from east to west. Long, curved reinforced concrete shells cover the two platforms and rest on the upward extended longitudinal walls of the underground stair wells to the subway. They are supported on the street side by slender steel columns. This allows the roof to open up freely to the platforms.

schlaich bergermann und partner was responsible for the conceptual design, construction design and technical spots check of the shell structure. The project was realized in cooperation with Gruber + Popp Architekten.

The article deals with the special conditions of the project.
