Retractable lightweight structures using textile membranes are used more and more often. The functionality of a building is significantly increased by the implementation of an adaptive building envelope. A stadium for example can be transformed into a multifunctional arena within minutes. The Al Janoub Stadium in Qatar has been inaugurated in May 2019. With its 10 800 m² large retractable membrane roof it forms a milestone of modern stadium architecture. The innovative concept of the retractable roof has been developed to perfectly fit to the overall architectural appearance. Within 30 min the retractable roof can be closed to provide full shade for the playing field and the stands. The possibility of providing shade is essential in areas with strong solar radiation to reduce the temperature and to provide a certain user comfort.
