Located at the port of Doha, Stadium 974 will host seven World Cup matches. It is the world’s first entirely demountable, transportable World Cup stadium of its kind. Designed by Fenwick-Iribarren Architects and sbp, the stadium consists of a steel structure into which shipping containers with fully equipped functional areas are suspended. Based on the plug’n’play principle, the structure can be dismantled, moved and reassembled in whole or in parts at any other location.

The Al Bayt stadium designed by the architectural firm Dar Al-Handasah is based on the traditional Bedouin tents (Bayt Al Sha’ar) both inside and out. The facade is mainly black with prominent light bands, while the interior is dominated by a strong red and the traditional Sadu pattern. The tent roof has a double-layer membrane cladding. Another special feature is the retractable inner roof, which can be fully closed to protect from sun and rain.

Fenwick-Iribarren Architects’ design for the Al Thumama stadium is inspired by the woven patterns of a gahfiya and finds its appearance in the white, permeable facade. The roof consists of a cable net structure with an outer compression ring and two inner tension rings connected by radial trusses. Vertical, curved steel girders from the entrance level up to the compression ring form the substructure of the cable net facade, whose individual segments span between with double layers in a convex shape.

Due to the extreme climate conditions, a movable membrane roof was planned by Zaha Hadid Architects for the Al Janoub Stadium, which shades both the stands and the playing field and protects them from the weather. In order to optimally integrate the interior roof into the curved roof shape, this was likewise given a folded appearance.

The new Al Rayyan Stadium, designed by Pattern Design, will be the new venue for the local soccer club. The roof consists of a ring girder structure in which the tension and compression rings are supported to the outside by radial trusses. Towards the inside of the roof, it is covered with a lightweight membrane, while the outer roof uses solid sandwich panels to ensure insulation and acoustic conditions.

We wish all teams and fans an exciting and successful World Cup!
