By enabling sustainable re-use of its building components, this unique stadium for the FIFA World Cup 2022 is the first demountable, transportable and reusable stadium of its kind.
Together with Fenwick Iribarren Architects and Hilson Moran an innovative concept was developed, wherein the stadium can be easily demounted at the end of the World Cup and re-established as many smaller stadia or even moved to an entirely different location. Therefore, the building represents an exemplary alternative to current sports venues, many of which sit dormant after a mega-event. The structure consists of a steel frame that evokes a high bay warehouse separated in different blocks – including the stands, stalls, and sanitary fittings. The elements can be easily dismantled and transported as certified shipping containers from the harbor located directly in the neighborhood. The ceiling panels, as well as the grandstands, can also be easily stacked and transported. This special structure enables a reduced CO2 footprint due to less construction material and waste. The Global Sustainability Assessment System awarded the design concept a 4-star certificate during the design phase. Due to the local transport connection, the construction site is also predestined for re-use after the World Cup.
