New stadium in Karlsruhe

This week, the plans for the new Wildpark Stadium, the home venue of Karlsruher SC, were presented to the public. We are now looking forward to realizing the project together with the construction company BAM Sports and the architects from agn Niederberghaus & Partner.

After a lengthy process, during which also a completely new construction site was discussed, the city of Karlsruhe has decided to convert the existing stadium on the same site. During this process, which will take place in the upcoming years, the existing rampart of the 1955 stadium will be used for construction. The previous stadium, highly expressive for its time, was planned as a multifunctional arena with an athletics track. In contrast, the new one is designed specifically as a football venue.

The appearance of the stadium is characterized by a striking Y-shaped column façade surrounding the structure. As a recurring, design-determining element, the façade thus has a permeable and spacious character. The impressive, almost 17-meter-high columns consist of two prefabricated concrete elements, which are given their plasticity by a centrally positioned shadow gap. The structure uses the high tare weight of the Y-props, which reduces the tensile forces generated in the roof down to the foundation. Therefore, it becomes possible to make the foundations in the earth wall smaller.

Preparations by the city of Karlsruhe have already begun for construction to begin in December 2019. We congratulate all participants and look forward to an exciting project and collaboration with agn Niederberghaus & Partner and BAM Sports.
