Topping-out ceremony at Europe’s first eight-court sports hall

Europe’s largest sports hall is currently being built in the town of Monheim am Rhein between the cities of Cologne and Düsseldorf. Work on the eight-court sports hall only began last spring. This week, the topping-out ceremony was already celebrated. The sports hall will be used by the two neighboring schools as well as the Monheim clubs.

The winning competition design by our team with NUSSLI (general contractor), asp Architekten GmbH (architecture), Ingenieurbüro Herzner und Schröder (technical building services) and Corall Ingenieure GmbH (fire protection) envisages a sustainable structure: Four hall units are housed on each of the two storeys and can be connected if required. This creates a total of 4,400 square meters sports area and an additional 3,000 square meters for changing rooms, access spaces, and technology. A retractable grandstand also offers space for up to 500 spectators.

The building is being constructed using prefabricated modular components. This way, the timber construction will be finished in only three months. Also, the rest of the construction is making progress as planned so the sports hall will be handed over to the school already in fall this year.
