A tied‐arch bridge as new entrance to Riedlingen

A tied‐arch bridge as new entrance to Riedlingen – A bridge replacement project as part of the city’s flood protection. In the city of Riedlingen, which lies along the Danube River, a new bridge was required at the main entrance to the historic city center. The new road bridge needed an increased span to accommodate the canal widening, which has already been carried out in recent years as part of the city’s flood protection plan. The design of the tied arch bridge goes back to a winning entry in a design competition held in 2003. After further design development, the bridge is realized as a steel tied‐arch bridge with a composite deck for the roadway. Prefabrication of the large main steel girders allowed the construction time to be minimized. To provide alternative city access for pedestrians during the eight months construction period, a new permanent footbridge was installed to sit alongside the road bridge and will later provide improved access to the nearby recreation area ”Donauinsel“.
