As part of an overarching concept in Luxemburg, various new long-distance bicycle routes have been realized. Veloroute PC 8, one of these new connections is linking the district of Belval to the center of Esch-sur-Alzette. Along the route lies the so-called ‘Promenade,’ Europe’s longest pedestrian and bicycle bridge, measuring 1.2 km. The bridge segment designed by sbp is 290 m long and accommodates both pedestrian and bicycle traffic at a height of 7.5 m, running parallel to the freight tracks. The suspended bridge section, characterized by its rhythm of asymmetrical masts, covered steel balconies, and tree-lined avenues, establishes a symbolic center of the new route across the industrial landscape. Its one-sided cantilevered support structure allows for column-free space on the on the track side, ensuring ample clearance from the loading gauge associated with freight traffic.
The steel structure, designed in distinctive colors, is an homage to the industrial heritage of the location. Comprising 15 gallows assembled from standardized, tapered cut I-profiles, the mast supports are rigidly clamped at the base. An orthotropic plate, made of weatherproof steel, serves as a continuous girder. In order to facilitate straightforward maintenance, there is an ingenious detail: The vertical tension rods on the and hanger are dimensioned as a pair in such a way that the remaining tension rod can carry the permanent loads in case of replacement – additional auxiliary support is therefore not required during replacement. Furthermore, the bridge is dimensioned to accommodate emergency vehicles when necessary.
